Hello everyone,

Welcome to 9th Grade Honors English! I hope that your summer is going well. Let me begin by saying that it was so nice to get a chance to meet with you guys and gals before we left. I have heard such wonderful things about you and I am really looking forward to teaching you in the fall. We are starting out with a different text compared to years past, Fahrenheit 451, so be ready for Science Fiction when we return. As I said, I will be in and out all summer but I will check my email periodically to answer your questions. I will also put some of your questions and responses on the blog when I can to help everyone finish up their projects on time. If you are struggling or have decided not to complete the summer project please let me know as soon as possible. Attached is a copy of the Fahrenheit 451 guided questions and the summer reading assignment. As you know, both assignments will be due the first day of school, no exceptions.

April 20 to April 24

7th Grade:

Mon. to Friday: Student will continue to WASL this week. We will also read the Greek myth Orpheus, the informational text The Power of Music, and Icarus. Students will be tested on these stories on Friday.

Homework: Many students still have not returned a signed progress report to me. Please have students return those as soon as possible or ask me for a new one (please check Skyward to see if your student has turned their progress report in). I have also assigned 4th quarter book projects and will be attaching a copy of the assignment here soon.

8th Grade:

Mon. to Friday: Students will continue to WASL this week. We will also continue to read The Giver and there will be a quiz on Friday. The first three pages of the 4th quarter book project were also due April 21st. If you have yet to turn them in, make sure you get to work and turn them in with a late pass.

Honors 9th Grade English:

Mon: Finish Poetry unit, Peer Edit “I am from . . .” poems, begin group presentations
Tues: Finish group presentations and Lyrics assignment
Wed and Thurs: Begin Princess Bride (Read the Introduction and complete the questions that go with it)
Friday: Continue Princess Bride (Read Ch. 1-4 and complete the questions that correspond)
Homework: Read up to page 96 in your Princess Bride text and complete the questions up to that sections (Due Tues). Also begin to work on your resume pre-write worksheet.

April 13th to April 17

7th Grade:

Mon. to Friday: Students have begun to study Mythology. We are starting with Greek mythology but are using the students on heritage to decide where we go from there. We are also taking WASL on Tues, Wed, and Thurs.

Homework: Students should continue to read for 20 minutes every night and work on their book project.

8th Grade:

Mon. to Friday: Students are going to begin reading The Giver and taking the WASL.

Homework: Students should continue to read for 20 minutes every night and work on their book project. The first three pages are due ton the 21st.

Honors 9th Grade English:

Mon. to Friday: Students are going to continue working through the poetry unit. They will be working in small groups to analyze poems from the text and present those poems to the class.

Homework: Poetry packets are due April 17th!

April 6th to April10th

7th Grade:

Mon. to Friday: Students completed their persuasive essays in preparation for the Writing WASL. Students also prepared for the upcoming WASL by working through some Reading WASL practice questions (multiple choice and short answer) and learning how to grade their responses.

8th Grade:

Mon. to Friday: Students prepared for the upcoming WASL by working through some Reading WASL practice questions (multiple choice and short answer) and learning how to grade their responses.

Honors 9th Grade English:

Mon: Analyze the poetry of Shakespeare, Marlowe, and Raleigh. Spring Break homework due!
Tues: Lord Byron and Maya Angelous (Cataloge Poems)
Wed and Thurs: Begin reciting memorized poems. Study Robert Frost (Sonnet/Imagery)
Friday: Yeats and E.E. Cummings
Homework: Make sure that you continue working on your poetry packets and your poem analysis essays. Also, be sure to pick our a novel/author to do your 4th quarter book project/research paper on.

March 23 to March 27

7th Grade:

Mon. to Friday: Students worked in their Elements of Literature textbook. We are learning to identify and accurately analyze poetic devices like metaphor, simile and personification.

Homework: Your student should have showed your a progress report during their conferences this week that showed their third quarter grade and some reflections that they did. Please make sure that your student has you sign and return that progress report. It will be due on April 7th.

8th Grade:

Mon. to Friday: Students finished up their unit on Theme with the story “ .” Students then watched then watched the film Anne Frank and were asked to identify different elements of literature (plot, characterization, etc) each day.

Homework: Student will finish up the film Anne Frank when they return from break and complete their film analysis. Your student should have showed your a progress report during their conferences this week that showed their third quarter grade and some reflections that they did. Honors 9th Grade English:

Mon: Imagery/Symbolism/Allegory. Read “Starfish” and assign poems to memorize (due April 8th).
Tues to Thurs: Introduction to Poetry and how to read poety. Read and analyze “Schoolville,” “Hope,” and “Here a Pretty Baby Lies”
Friday: Half day! Reading logs are due at the beginning of class. Students will be assigned their spring break homework. Poetic terms and your first five poems are due when we return.
Homework: Make sure to do your poetic terms and five original poems. You also need to make sure to complete a reading log. Have a wonderful break!

Jan. 20 to Jan. 23, 2009

7th Grade:

Tues: Continue working on WASL Writing Prompt
Wed: MAP Testing (Language) Homework: Students should complete their introduction paragraphs and their three body paragraphs. These are due at the beginning of class on Thursday.
Thurs: Learn about conclusion paragraphs and draft conclusions in class. Student will also be learning to revise and edit one anothers papers.
Friday: Half day and the end of second quarter. Students will continue revising and editing their essay in class. We will also continue reading The Crossing.

Homework: Make sure that you have everything in (missing work, 250 page summaries, etc.) by Friday!!!!

8th Grade:

Tues: Continue reading Streams to the River . . .

Wed: Answer questions from Assignment 1 and 2 in small groups.

Thurs: Complete questions from Assignment 1 and 2. Correct questions as a class and continue reading Streams to the River . . .

Friday: Half day and the end of second quarter. Continue reading Streams to the River . . . as a class.

Homework: Homework: Make sure that you have everything in (missing work, reading logs, second quarter projects, etc.) by Friday!!!!

Honors 9th Grade English:

Tues: Finish reading Act 1. Complete questions 6 to 10 (on pg. 930).
Wed: Act 1 Quiz!!!
Thurs: Begin reading Act 2.
Friday: Half day and the end of second quarter. Reading logs are due at the beginning of class. Students will continue reading Romeo and Juliet. Group 1 will present their scene.
Homework: Make sure that you have everything in (missing work, reading logs, second quarter projects, etc.) by Friday!!!!

Friday: Check out books from the library. Correct WASL Prompt.
Homework: Turn in your late book projects (you lose one letter grade for each day you are late). Your 50 page summaries, up to 250 pages, is due Jan. 16th.

8th Grade:

Wed: Continue working on book project
Thur: Book project due!
Fri: Finish up “Flowers for Algernon” and the questions (Complete questions 1, 4, 5 and Reading Check (a to e). There will be a test on “Flowers for Algernon” on Monday!
Homework: Turn in your late book projects (you lose one letter grade for each day you are late). Your 50 page summaries, up to 400 pages, is due Jan. 16th.

Honors 9th Grade English:

Wed: Read “Where I find my heroes” and complete questions 1-4 and 1-5.
Thur: Read “Cyrano de Bergerac” from the Lit book and complete the questions within selection.
Fri: Turn in book projects and reading logs. Read introduction to the Drama unit and introduction to Shakespear texts.
Homework: Begin reading log for next week. If you did not turn in your book project on Friday, turn it in on Monday for reduced credit.

Jan. 5th and 6th, 2009

Mon: Read more by Cisenero.
Tues: Work on book projects in class.
Homework: Bring in your novel and all the supplies that you will need to work on your book project in class on Tuesday. Remember, your book project is due Thursday, Jan. 8th. Your 50 page summaries, up to 250 pages, is due Jan. 16th.

8th Grade:

Tues: Read “Helon on Eighty-Sixth Street” and complete questions 7 to 10 as well as the “Trading Places” activity.
Peer Edit day on Tuesday (Jan. 6). Rough Drafts are due Jan. 6th.
Homework: Continue working on your Rough Draft (due Jan. 6th) and then your final draft (due Jan. 9th).

Winter Break work for Honors English

Hello all,

Well, it would seem that the fates are smiling on you. Since we did not have school on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday it no longer makes sense to have you complete the Mythology project over break. Therefore, as sad as it makes me to say this, I am going to have to cancel the mythology project. Instead, when we return in January, you will read the last few myths from the text book and be given a test of the material and concepts that we’ve covered.

However, just because I have cancelled the mythology project does not mean that you don’t have homework. Please continue working on your second quarter book project (Rough Drafts are due Jan. 6th and Final Draft due Jan. 9). If you have not already cleared your book with me, I expect to see an email from you before the end of winter break.

You will also owe me three reading logs (From 12/19, 12/26, and 1/2). All three reading logs will be collected on Jan. 5th!

If you have any further questions or concerns over the break, please message me here and I will try to get back to you as quickly as I can.

Homework: 1.) Write two similes in which you compare two personality traits to other unrelated objects. Remember that you need to include illustrations with each. 2.) Continue reading 20 minutes each night and continue working on your book project (Due Jan 8th).

Homework: Find a partner and think about the god, goddess, or monster that you would like to do your research on. Read the selection on “Osiris, Isis, and Horus” and “Lodge-Boy and Thrown-Away” and complete the questions that go with each text (Due 12/17). Continue working on your reading logs (Due 12/19)

Remember that you need to have a book picked out for your book project by Dec. 3rd!
